8 coffee regions of Guatemala

Guatemala is a small country in Central America that produces one of the best coffee in the world. There are many regions in the country that are famous for their outstanding coffee varieties, such as: Akatenango, Antigua, Atitlan, Coban, Pakaya, Freihaanes, Huehuetenango and Nuevo Oriente.
The valley of Akatenango is at an altitude of 2000 meters above sea level. Deciduous forests grow here on fertile volcanic soil. The air temperature in this area of ​​Central America is not too high, all thanks to the Pacific breeze. In combination with pronounced seasons, it is an ideal region for natural processing of coffee harvest.
The coffee region of Antigua is characterized by fertile volcanic soil, low humidity, sunny days and cool evenings. The valley is surrounded by three volcanoes: Agua, Fuego and Acattenango. Rich in minerals, volcanic soil gives the coffee grains a rich aroma and a subtle flavor of spices and chocolate. All this makes Antigua an excellent place for growing coffee.
Of the five volcanic regions of Guatemala, the Atitlana soil is the richest in terms of its organic constituents. In fact, 90% of coffee in the region is cultivated on the sides of the volcanoes surrounding the majestic Lake Atitlan. Nevertheless, it is not just the soil, the microclimate of the region that is strongly influenced by the winds of Xocomil blowing from Lake Atitlan.

The region of Freihanes is characterized by an elevated terrain, frequent rains, variable humidity, and the proximity of an active volcano. Pacaya volcano is one of the most active volcanoes on the planet, often spewing ash, which feeds the soil with important minerals. The dry season brings a lot of sun. Clouds, fog, fine rain are usually present in the morning, but the soil dries quickly, which allows you to dry the coffee harvest under the sun.
Huehuetenango is the most mountainous and dryest region in the country. Thanks to the warm climate and dry winds that blow towards the mountains from the Mexican plains of Tehuantepec, this region is protected from frost. Coffee is grown at an altitude of 2000 meters above sea level, and due to the remoteness of the area, it is cultivated only by local farmers.
Rainy and cloudy Nuevo Oriente is located in the former volcanic area. The soil here consists of metamorphic rocks and is very different in composition from soils in those regions where volcanoes were active after the first coffee trees were planted. In this region, coffee has been grown since 1950 and almost exclusively by small producers.
